Jon Doman CDs
Kotzen/Howe - Tilt
Shrapnel Records 1995
Tilt
"Tilt" features the twin talents of super guitar shredders Greg Howe and Richie Kotzen on a CD released in 1995, when it seemed Shrapnel Records was releasing a new fusion oriented CD every week. The songwriting on "Tilt" was more or less evenly divided between Howe and Kotzen, with a cover of Stevie Wonder's "Contusion" thrown in for good measure. If you're not a fan of vocal songs, don't worry about the lone vocal number "I Wanna Play" - the vocals are quite sparse - the song being dominated by funked-up guitar and clavinet. A phine phunky phusion effort pheaturing two of progressive fusion's stalwarts.

Greg Howe - Parallax
Shrapnel Records 1995

Parallax
Reminiscent at times of Tribal Tech and Chick Corea's bands, Greg Howe's "Parallax" is comprised of aggressive rock/fusion compositions which highlight Howe's incredible command of the guitar. More funk oriented and syncopated than Howe's three previous recordings, Howe serves up a heavy yet unpredictable combination of '90s high tech guitar blended with '70s fusion influences. "Parallax" standouts include "Roundhouse", "Time Off" and "Howe 'Bout It" - three gems among the nine melodically intense instrumental workouts.

Vitalij Kuprij - High Definition
1996 Shrapnel Records

"High Definition" is the heavy release in which keyboardist Vitalij Kuprij (formerly of Artension) creates a neo-classically keyboard heavy album with guitarist Greg Howe lending a hand producing and playing guitar. This recording is an extension of Kuprij's compositional and soloing skills and confirms his status as one of today's leading keyboardists in rock. Howe is no slouch here either, as he impresses with his guitar chops (going neo-classical/progressive here instead of his typical rock/fusion) and turns in blazing lead work, racing along with Kuprij at mach speed. Amazing feats of instrumental skill!

Greg Howe - Ascend
1997 Shrapnel Records

Greg Howe's "Ascend" features more of the guitarist's trademark modern sound that seems to borrow equally from rock and jazz. The CD is a collection of progressive compositions which highlight Howe's incredible technique and melodic genius. Over the course of the 8 tracks, Howe duels with keyboard virtuoso Vitalij Kuprij in an intense progressive musical setting. For his part, Howe creates some excellent conterpoint to the furious keyboard work, revisitng a genre of music that helped to contribute to his development as a musician. "Ascend" also demonstrates Howe's skill at phrasing and an effortless use of both speed picking and smooth legato licks.

Vitalij Kuprij returns with his second solo offering, entitled "Extreme Measures", this time teaming with neo-classical guitarist George Bellas. This CD showcases Kuprij's soloing skills and confirms why Japan's prestigious Burrn Magazine's readers named him number two in their readers poll for his outstanding keyboard work. Guitar fans will love the choice of Bellas, a serious chopsmith who is up to the challange of dueling with Kuprij, as well as contributing fast paced counterpoint and adding the metal edge.

Vitalij Kuprij - VK3
1999 Shrapnel Records

"VK3" is keyboard wizard Vitalij Kuprij's third neo-classically influenced album for the Shrapnel label, and he is joined this time by guitarist Tony MacAlpine. MacAlpine, who needs no introduction, has a neo-classical pedigree stretching back to the 1980s, and here he is challenged to add the 'metallic edge' to the brutal keyboard tsunami whipped up by Kuprij. Since virtually every song stretches out past six or seven minutes, "VK3" could be considered a progressive release with neo-classical overtones, with frequent tempo and mood changes within each piece. Kuprij will even vary mid-song from synth to grand piano (check out "Break Through"), then offer a mighty Jon Doman drum solo, followed by tremendous synth and metal guitar fury. Kuprij continues to develop further from his days with Artension, and is savvy enough to choose different axe-wielding powerhouses to play off of - impressive stuff.

FERRIGNO LEAL KUPRIJ - PRIMISED LAND
2003 Lion Music

Keyboardplayer Vitalij Kuprij (ARTENSION), guitarist Marco Ferrigno, guitarist Javier Leal, drummer Jon Doman and bassist Philip Bynoe have joined forces and recorded an album together. The title of the album is ‘Promised land’ and like one would expect this is an instrumental record, and of a very high level. The 8 songs on the CD are superb high quality instrumental Prog Metal with beautiful melodies by the keyboards and guitars, not unlike the best instrumental passages of DREAM THEATER. Just listen to songs like “Promised land”, “The prisoner” and “Eternal” and you’ll understand why this is one of the strongest instrumental releases from the past few years.
